Second Skin

Second Skin is an examination of the lengths women will go to conform to the pressures of Western beauty ideals set out by the media and patriarchal society. I explored historic methods of trussing the female figure, changing the natural shape to enhance, reduce, restrict or deform. Juxtaposed with this and inspired by Anya Gallaccio’s compressed gerberas in glass sheets titled ‘Preserve Beauty’, I researched the processes that natural materials go through in order to preserve or prevent decay, for instance drying fruit or flowers and curing meat, then drawing a parallel with the claims of manufacturers of beauty serums, creams, skin peels and scrubs that they reduce signs of aging or preserve youth. This project culminated in a series of corsets and under garments that I produced from materials that would decay over time.
